Herndon has dealt for so long about the issues such as large commercial vehicles parked in the residential streets, vehicles parked and left unattended on the residential streets (some of those with flat tires and expired tags). While neighboring jurisdictions like Fairfax County and Loudoun County had already implemented restrictive measures on large commercial vehicles, Herndon was let behind. This resulted in abuse of our residential streets as we could clearly see people coming from other jurisdiction and leaving their large commercial vehicles on our streets.
As a result, we amended and enacted chapter 42 related to Motor Vehicle and traffic to restrict those vehicles weighing more than 12,000 pounds or being longer than 21 feet from parking in residential areas for more than two hours at a time. This also allowed us to impose $50 fines on motorists who block curb ramps; it also allows officials to fine drivers $50 if they park within 5 feet of a driveway. This was much needed from safety perspective as well. This is work-in-progress as we have more to address the parking and safety issue as the metro (silver-line) opens.
As affordable workforce housing is a critical issue that we are concerned about, we have been looking into different options that we can leverage in order to help alleviate this issue. Here is the poll that Reston Now conducted on how town of Herndon should handle affordable housing policies.
We have decided to relax the restrictions on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) for both single-family detached and single-family attached structures. This policy change aims to address housing affordability by enabling families to generate additional income through renting out ADUs. Additionally, it offers a more affordable housing option for renters, thereby supporting our workforce in securing housing closer to their places of employment.
We initiated community roundtable and had quite a few events before COVID19 hit. Here is the list of Roundtable updates reported by the local News Paper Herndon Connection.
